ONE MONTH 'TIL THE OPEN
By Nikki G.
Open huh!?!
What's all this talk about the
"open"? Why are my coaches and other athletes training twice a day
and really getting after it in the WOD's? Why is everyone talking about their
food all the time. And again, what the hell is the "open"?!
These are all questions I had running through my head the beginning the year
2011. Let me give you a small hint as to the answer to all those
questions. For me, the answer was " it's the wildest rollercoaster
of an opportunity that you will ever have!"
One evening after class, I was
approached by my coach (Meghan) with the question: "Are you registered for
the open? It only cost $10. Why not?" I immediately seized my opportunity
to inquire as to what exactly the "open" was. As I listened to
her explain "The Games" (the CrossFit SuperBowl) and the road to get
there being the open/sectionals and then regionals, all I could think was
"this isn't for me. I mean, I just started CrossFit... and I haven't even
THOUGHT of CF as a competitive sport. Nope, this definitely isn't for me.
" So I didn't register.
The night of the cut-off(approx. 30
minutes before deadline to be exact) to register, Meghan again approached
me and asked me why I hadn't registered. I really didn't have an answer
prepared for her. She asked me to participate to get involved in the community.
I like community. So totally, lackadaisically, I registered right there
in the box. Right before the deadline.
The Open starts. I learn that the
process is this: Week after week for 5 weeks a WOD is released worldwide that
everyone must complete within the week and submit a score online. Their
performance must be judged by a coach or a video may be submitted to CFHQ.
Being that the CrossFit East region is such a tight community, local
boxes take turns hosting each week so that the WOD may be completed in a
competitive atmosphere. Each WOD must be completed Rx for any of your
scores to go towards your boxes team score. At this point I am SCARED TO
DEATH. I have Rx'd very few WODs at this point. I won't bore
you with the details of each and every weeks' workout but I will tell you the
highlights. I did Rx EVERY WOD. I PR'd my double unders, my clean
and jerk, and my box friendships over the course of those weeks and guess what?
Our team made it in the top 30. CFJAX was going to Regionals. Guess
what else? I was given a spot on the team.
If you would have told me when I
signed up for my Bronze Membership in September of 2010 that by May of 2011 I'd
be competing for my box in Regionals again PR'ing like crazy(this time rowing
and handstand push-ups that I didn't have AT ALL until it was go time in
WOD #1!) I would have told you that you were out of your mind. Our team
made it up from 30th place to 7th place respectively.
